General, Vascular and Minimally Invasive Surgery

BEFORE SURGERY

Preoperative Workup
As with any operation, prior to an excision or ClosureŽ procedure a general medical history must be done in the office to determine a patient’s surgical and anesthetic candidacy. An ultrasound exam of the diseased surface veins as well as the deeper leg veins must also be done. Normal deep veins must be confirmed prior to operating on the surface veins. Deep veins run inside the leg and cannot be seen or felt . So long as the deep veins are intact and do not have clots within them, then the diseased surface veins can be removed with minimal, if any side effects. (Note that if these veins are already diseased, then they aren’t usable for anything else anyway.)

Risks involved with these procedures will be discussed in the office and prior to the procedure. Patients are encouraged to ask questions related to surgical risk.
