TREATING
SPIDER VEINS
Injection Sclerotherapy
This is a cosmetic procedure used to treat tiny 'spider' veins. It
is done in the office and must be accompanied by compression. The results are mediocre at
best, and it frequently requires many treatments to obtain adequate results. We will
perform sclerotherapy at patient request, but do not strongly recommend it.
Insurance does not cover sclerotherapy.
Laser Treatments
This is a cosmetic procedure highly effective for spider
veins and some SMALL varicose veins. Laser treatment is useless for large varicose veins.
We recommend laser treatment for follow up after closure has been completed in order to
reduce spider vein recurrence. Insurance does
not cover laser treatments.
What to Expect: ( Immediately After Treatment )
Immediately after laser treatment, fine veins may blanch, while
larger veins with thicker walls either may blanch or turn gray, and flatten. The vein
should not refill/rebound after it is depressed (as the laser has sealed it shut).
Surrounding erythema (reddening) and edema (swelling) occurs within a few minutes.
Erythema can last a few days and is normal. Smaller superficial vessels usually form a
'cat scratch' scab over the vein. Most of these effects can take a few weeks to fade.
Complete vein ablation, (especially larger skin veins), commonly requires 1 to 3
treatments. Remember that veins too large for laser treatment can be resolved with minor
surgery
Don't forget that the laser can also be used with excellent results for elimination of
unwanted hair anywhere on the body. This is popular for women in the bikini area and under
the arms. It is also useful for unwanted facial and neck hair in both women and in men.
Ask me about it or inquire at the office for more details about this amazing new laser
treatment!
